The Oppressed Overcomers (for Interdependence Day)

We the people
in order to form
a more perfect union
allowed the voices
of a chosen few
(chosen by the few
of the few
for the few)
to imperfectly reflect
the supposéd communion
of the celebrated whole
(and implicitly reject
the sordid disunion
of the disregarded many)
creating gaping holes
in the fabric
of our fellowship...

and yet amidst
the segregated confusion
and degradated delusion
Spirits and Voices
arose from the margins
transcending their situations
and transforming our Story...

Sacagawea
brought her innate
native Wisdom and Direction
when the non-native navigators
lost their way a-loft
in dreams of exploration
in disconnection from the Land
attempting to canoe the mountains
that towered before them
day by day
hour by hour

Sojourner Truth
spoke Truth to power
crying 'ain't I a woman?'
to the men
who expected her
to cower and wilt
as she walked
town to town
road by road
with her body
bearing wounds
and her feet
wearing blisters

the Grimké sisters
needed no misters
to protect and provide
for their needs
but planted the seeds
and kindled the lights
that illumined our sights
to recognize the slights
against those not receiving
but deserving equal rights
the Women
the Slaves
the Native Neighbors betrayed
calling out those
deceiving the masses
perceiving false notions
of freedom
and liberty
and justice
(supposedly for all)
of different levels
of human worth
and different races
of human birth
all based on emotions
of fear of the other
creating nations
segregating colours
cobbling stones
to stack one upon another
building walls
and structures
and systems
to protect ourselves
from supposéd enemies
who are Sisters
and Brothers
and beautiful Others

these Beloved Women
(and many Others)
allowed their Spirits
to move their feet
out into the street
and raise their voices
all channeling the Spirit
of humble and holy Hannah
who wholly offered
her whole Self
her barrenness and grief
her oppression and belief
her only Beloved son
in deep trust
and great Faith
in greater Love
that brings Hope
out of despair
and Blessedness
out of barrenness
and Life
out of strife
who raised her Voice
in revelations
that created reverberations
that continue to this day
(uniquely and Divinely
and redemptively originating
from the Spirit
of the Christ)
prophetic proclamations
of what has been
cast in stone
as the status quo
being overthrown
by the vox populi
the mantle of privilege
being dismantled
by the Winds of Wisdom
human structures
of oppression and discrimination
crumbling to the Ground
stacked stones
of injustice and inequality
tumbling one off of another
into a rubbling of remnants
of failed attempts
to contain the Uncontainable
and control the Uncontrollable

We the people
so often reduce
the Voices of Prophets
to mumblings
hearing the rumblings
resounding from their Spirits
and lungs and lips
of new Realities
and possibilities
we groan as we grab
onto what is familiar
(even as our grasp slips)
and close ourselves in
upon what is known
fearing the unknown...

but what if W
allowed what we fear
as the unknown
to open us
and guide us into
what is emerging
and growing
out of the rubble?

Might the submerged seeds
that we engineered
into systems of survival
for the chosen few
(at the expense
of the disregarded many)
be nurtured into sinews
of One Beloved Body
that flourishes and thrives
and beautiful interdependence
and interconnectedness?

Could the remnant stones
reform and transform
from buildings into Bridges
no longer sources
of stumbling and separating
but now Pathways
of humbling and Healing
a new Way
created from the remnants
of the old
a new Day
emerging in the radiance
from the cold
of a ruthless winter
a rootless wandering
that led us to splinter
into factions
based on fictions
that cause frictions
once destructive
now Creative
once dissentive
now Redemptive
sighs of captivity
and martyrdom
translated into songs
of possibility and Freedom
lifting every Voice to sing
'til Earth and Heaven ring
with the Melodies of Majesty
and the harmonies of Liberty
and the refrain
of We the People
is no longer
an ideal possibility
but an embodied Reality?

Will we listen?
Will we learn?
Will we turn
towards the Light?
Will we return
to the Light?
Will we remember
that We ARE the Light?
Will we lift up
those Voices long silenced?
Will we let Them
lead us into
the new Way?
Will we lift up
ALL Voices
and sing
the new Song
of the new Day?
