Fast Tuesday

when Fat Tuesday

becomes Frozen Tuesday

another blustery Bluesday

an I-don’t-get-to-choose-day

a nothing-left-to-lose day

having lost power and heat

for more and more days

leaving us feeling accosted

in an exhausting daze

we find neighbors in need

being met by neighbors

who heed them

and shovel iced

doorways and driveways

to free them

and open their own homes

to warm them

and feed them

they give up autonomy

to welcome Community

they give up their privacy

to honour the primacy

of Human connectivity

and interdependency

as Fat Tuesday

becomes Fast Tuesday

we are awed

in the Presence

of Sacred sensitivity 

and Divine sensibility

the Power that warms 

what most needs

to be thawed

the Kindness

that binds us

in Sacrifice

that breaks the ice

of all that is chilled

and reminds us

that emptiness

is the Source

of being filled.
