some days (and others)

Some days, all you can sense is creation
calling you out of slumber and into sensation.
Some days, all you can sense is condemnation
castigating you out of self and into separation.

Other days…
all senses coalesce into an infinite, immense
and intense convergence of transcendence
flooding out of every single flower
gushing forth from each unique glance
hallowing each and every hour
consecrating each and every chance

Some days, it seems as if the universe or providence
is leading you only into clarity and vision.
Some days, it seems as if the cosmos or karma
is feeding you only into chaos and confusion.

         Other days…
         it’s a host of in-betweens and maybe-sos
         and might-have-beens and who-really-knows
         spinning in tense locomotion
         swirling in a wakening trance
         thrusting in profound propulsion
         twirling in dynamic Dance

Some days, it's all you can do
to get out of your head and into your heart.
Some days, it's all you can do
to get out of your bed when your head's blown apart.

         Other days…
you’re buffeted by blankets, suffocated by sheets
you’re buoyed by blessings, dragged down by deceits
not putting the horse before cart
not yet in the place to advance
you long for a new way to start
with no strength to support a new stance

Some days, the clouds have silver linings
and the darkest depths are shining.
Some days, the clouds shed tears of grey
and the darkness bleeds dismay.

         Other days…
clouds are puffy and white, forming shapes of delight
clouds are haunting and dark, forming storms strong and stark
         brilliant colours alighting, aligning
         painting vibrant, transcendent array
         mixed with dreary divining, refining
         a mysteriously ominous display

Some days, life's a beach of gold...
full of wonders to behold.
Some days, life's a piece of shit...
when you look at it.

         Other days…
life’s a dancer mid-progression floating weightless on her feet
life’s an answer to a question we dare never to repeat
like a Truth that is embraced
         but simply cannot be controlled
like a Way that lies untraced
         with untold wonders to behold

Some days, what looks like badness
is a seedbed for gladness.
Some days, what looks like sadness
is a seedbed for madness.

         Other days…
you're frozen in fog and hovering in haze
you’re stuck in the struggle, dozed in a daze
you’re lost in the shuffle, mired in old ways
you’re tired of the treadmill, trapped in the maze
yet desire still remains
through the stresses and strains
pumping life through your veins
boundless Love breaking chains

Some days, you hope that ONE DAY,
all days will be more than merely ‘some’ days.
Other days, you hope that SOMEDAY,
one day will eclipse all these 'other' days.

And that all of these days will be all set ablaze
in the glory and grace of the Infinite Gaze...

  1. I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts about any techniques or "tricks" you might have to increase the ratio of days of "universe or providence" to days of "clarity and vision". Today I definitely felt, "trapped in the maze".

  2. wish i could help, rob...but i suppose if i had a 'trick' to it all, i wouldn't be writing rambling poems about how maniacal and mysterious it all is (at least to me)...peace.

  3. Good point. But it doesn't have to be an Answer. It would just be interesting to hear your musings. It doesn't necessarily have to be 100% original either. You could just give us your opinions on something you read by Nouwen or someone else....just an idea.

(And thanks for replying to the comment. I think that was something that was missing from the blog before.)

    1. the best words i know of are from Frederick Buechner... 'There is no event so commonplace but that God is present within it, always hiddenly, always leaving you room to recognize him or not to recognize him, but all the more fascinatingly because of that, all the more compellingly and hauntingly... If I were called upon to state in a few words the essence of everything I was trying to say both as a novelist and as a preacher, it would be something like this: Listen to your life. See it for the fathomless mystery that it is. In the boredom and pain of it, no less than in the excitement and gladness: touch, taste, smell your way to the holy and hidden heart of it. Because in the last analysis, all moments are key moments, and life itself is grace.' i can't do any better than that. and when i'm 'trapped in the maze' (like i am most days), those words have helped me to at least regain my sanity whilst still winding my way through it. the didn't lead me 'out' of the maze, but they gave me great comfort and perspective and peace in the midst of the wandering and wondering. :)
