wandering through the haze
of an unfamiliar pasture
wondering through a daze
of an ongoing disaster
like sheep who are fearing
an inevitably unpleasant
and potentially fatal shearing
running off into a wilderness
and bleating away
beyond the hearing
of the One
always listening and watching
beyond the clearing
towards the brambles
and steep cliffs
risking life and limb
and ever courting danger
to seek every stray
and show them the Way
back Home to the Manger
we are longing for Someone
to defend and direct us
with humble Courage
and hallowed Wisdom
Who will never reject us
even when our lives
are in shambles
in these uncertain
and uncommonly perilous days
a Good Shepherd
who cares for us
when our lives
are a mess
and shares with us
in our fears
and distress
Who finds us
in our wanderings
through dark meadows
and our wonderings
in stark shadows
and reminds us
that we are
not only sheep
needing a Shepherd
but also Shepherds
feeding sheep
upon terrain
that feels
far too steep
within the pain
that festers
far too deep
while we hear
the endless bleating
as we are needing
some dreamless sleep
and our sanity
collapses under the weight
of our stress
it's not too late
to find that we
are right on time
to find our hearts
and Spirits opening
and overflowing
with the same showing
of passionate Compassion
and natural Nurture
that the Good Shepherd
has shown to us
and sown in us
and shone through us
to forage through
the chaotic complexities
or our paranoiac perplexities
the muck and mire
of our fear
and desire
and discover anew
the quixotic Hue
of the Beauty
within the mess
and the ability
to embrace the Totality
and to Love
and to Bless.
