graduate jim's grand adventure

it's been a few days since i've been on here. and for not letting you know where i've been, i apologize. (the blogging world is still so new to me, i forget things like putting up an 'out-of-blogosphere' notice when i'm away from this site ;)

Ian graduated high school last weekend with a flurry of activities and assemblies, family and friends, laughter and love. i will write more about the experiences and their impact on me personally in the not-too-distant future.

but for now, he and i are on his 'Graduation Grand Adventure' to celebrate his amazing accomplishments, and even more so to simply affirm Ian for the incredible young man he is. so we are doing exactly what he wanted to do.

we didn't fly to Hawaii or Cabo San Lucas. we aren't hitting Vegas and doing things that will only 'stay' there. we won't be trekking through the Himalayas or traipsing over the highlands.

Ian wanted to do things that are reflective of his nature.

simple.

fun.

memorable.

so we flew down to southern California via Allegiant Air (he always points out their ads at the Adams Centre during UM basketball games, and has always wanted to fly on one of their 'big planes that go zzzzzzoooooooom').

we are staying at my parents' place in San Diego, a condo on the 18th floor of a high-rise right in the heart of downtown (Ian calls it 'Grandma and Grandpa's Hotel') so that he can see his grandparents, whom he adores, and so he can ride up and down the elevator.

we are doing things here that most people take for granted, but are exhilarating for Ian.

eating at In-N-Out (double-double absolutely plain, fries and 7up for 'In-N-Out Jim').

riding the trolleys.

driving over the Coronado Bridge.

going to the beach.

listening to the sounds of the city...the sirens and signals, trains and trucks, airplanes and helicopters.

yes, we are also going to Sea World and to watch the Giants (hopefully) beat the Padres at Petco Park.

we will also be going up to Orange County for the weekend to stay with dear friends, see more family, go to his 'home church' (where he was born and baptised), and visit a place that is near and dear to him from his childhood (Irvine Park, where yes, my 19 year-old son wants to ride the little train and see the animals in the little zoo).

all this is to say that rather than writing about all this as it's happening, i'm going to simply live it. and then write about some of it later.

so i hope you'll understand my absence from this page for the next few days.

but getting a chance to simply live this experience with Ian - just the two of us - is so precious to me, i don't want to miss any of it by distancing myself in order to write about it.

it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and i wouldn't miss it for the world.

and certainly not just for a few blog posts. :)

so...we're off to the beach. and i'm off of this page for the next few days (unless inspiration strikes me in the middle of the night, which has been known to happen ;).

see you in a few days. and in the meantime...

en-JOY the journey :).
