'Fatuous Twaddle for a Phenomenal Friend' - Memorial Tribute to Jamie Kelly (10 May 1968 – 7 August 2014)

(Shared at the Memorial Celebration of Life for Jamie on 15 August 2014
First Presbyterian Church, Missoula, MT)

It says the Word was in the beginning, and that’s right. I used to think water was first, but if you listen carefully you will hear that the words are underneath the water.'

It all began as a date with a writer.

Norman Maclean, that is. The writer of the words I just wrote above.

It was October 11th, 2009. The centennial celebration of the arrival of the Maclean family to Missoula was happening here at the church. Jamie had been assigned by the Missoulian to cover the event. He told me later that even if he hadn’t been assigned the job, he would have requested it because of his love of Maclean’s writing.

After the dedication of the beautiful polished granite monument at the front of the sanctuary and a powerful series of readings (including one from Norman’s seminal work, A River Runs Through It, by his son, John), Jamie went about talking to people and getting quotes for his story.

One of those people he needed to talk to was me, one of the host pastors at the time.

After getting something he could use as a sound bite, I mentioned to him that I had read his column, ‘Fatuous Twaddle’, with a lot of interest and laughter (anyone who would retitle Mel Gibson’s ‘The Passion of the Christ’ as ‘Lethal Weapon V’ had my immediate adoration and intrigue). I also remembered mentioning that i knew that he was a jazz pianist. His eyes lit up and his head tilted slightly to the right and he said, ‘Oh YEAH?’ And before I knew it, I was thrust into a whirlwind of a mile-per-minute conversation, with topics ranging from our common love of Pat Metheny (and particularly his song ‘The First Circle’, which contains a piano solo by Lyle Mays that Jamie informed me was ‘the most perfect piano solo ever recorded’) to the movie ‘Life of Brian’ and all things Monty Python to the genius of Spinal Tap. (When I told him that once, as a last-minute substitute pianist for a worship service, I needed something quiet to play during the offering, and all I could think of to play was the little riff that Nigel Tufnel of Tap wrote in D minor – which, as we all know is the saddest of all keys – that sounds delicate & lovely, but is actually called ‘Lick My Love Pump’, he exploded with a laughter that rattled the windows of the Fellowship Hall.) And in that moment, I realized that I had been given the gift of a kindred, irreverent spirit, a true friend.

I needed a pianist for the late Christmas Eve service here later that year, and Jamie graciously agreed to help out. He played soulfully and transcendently. Then starting with the first Sunday in January, he responded to my open invitation and just started showing up to play in the band for the late service. He would regularly play for the offering after the sermon (NOT any Spinal Tap), always improvising (with plenty of great jazz chords thrown in), responding to the spirit of the message or just what was happening in his spirit. And it never ceased to amaze me how a person who was so gifted in language could in essence ‘re-preach’ a sermon he just heard with more eloquence and power using no words whatsoever (and to present that ‘proclamation’ as a self-professed ‘atheist’…or as Woody Allen, would say, ‘The Loyal Opposition’).

Those Sundays were balanced with regular times during the week to grab coffee (Diet Coke for him) at Caffe Dolce. We continued to bring up not only the things that made us laugh and the music, books, movies and sports that inspired us (including our endless argument regarding the greatness of baseball and basketball, where Jamie proclaimed that baseball is played on a field of dreams, and basketball is played on a court of thugs), but also the questions that puzzled us, the issues of life and Spirit that were the catalyst for many internal wrestling matches within both of us. The answers rarely came, and if they ever did, they did not come easy. Of course, as Maclean said, grace and art don’t come easy either. More often than not, I suppose our times together gave us some needed encouragement and empowerment to embrace and live the questions a bit more fully.

One of the things I loved most about being with Jamie was that I didn’t have to be my ‘pastor’ self with him. Often, I was my ‘bastard’ self with him. And yet, he seemed to enjoy and appreciate that even more. He loved being with people in situations where they could be REAL.

This meant that Jamie traveled into the deepest, darkest depths of existence... emotionally, relationally, spiritually, within himself and at times with others. He clearly did not always choose to do so. The journey of addiction and depression has a power of its own, and is not for the faint of heart. In experiencing the unpredictable currents of the River of life, Jamie was haunted by waters. He knew firsthand what St. Paul described in the 8th chapter of his letter to the church in Rome about how all of humanity and creation itself is groaning for release, sighing for peace, longing for hope. But it was out of those depths that he faced so often and so courageously that the incredible depth of sensitivity, passion and compassion emerged from that big ol’ heart and soul of his.

Over time, through the love of his families of origin and Spirit, he began to sense something that had been closed within him for years gradually opening up. And in his characteristic frankness, he asked me one day at Dolce, ‘So…how DOES one become a Presbyterian?’ And we talked about how the journey isn’t really about becoming a Presbyterian (or any kind of ‘-ian’) but more about being awakened to what that mysterious Presence around him and within him might be doing, how that divine Breath might be whispering to him, where that sacred Wind might be leading him, what those living words underneath the rocks in the River might be saying to him.

In essence, he responded by saying that he was discovering that those haunting waters were also hallowed and holy, and even healing. And he wanted to plunge into the River of Life and Love and emerge from those waters as a sign that he was experiencing the life and love of Jesus in a new and fresh way.

He wanted to be baptised in the Clark Fork.

His date with a writer became a date with a river.

And as he emerged from that River of Love and Life that day, a greater depth of passion for justice and peace and compassion for others emerged from his heart through his artistry and actions. His journey to Kenya, his adventures with the Superheroes of Kindness from Missoula Community School, his interactions with everyday heroes in the community and the compelling, creative ways that he articulated these experiences and encounters were a powerful means of advocating for those who rarely have a voice and awakening and inspiring our city to embody hope and peace and love in any ways possible. Jamie’s heart beat with the heartbeat of God’s love, the rhythm of the greatest Dance of all.

Which makes it all the more heartbreaking and harrowing, mystifying and maddening, disorienting and devastating to be gathered here today. Why, in God’s name (or as Jamie wrote, ‘Fred’s’ name), did that loving and lovely heart stop beating? How could such a brilliant star in the universe be extinguished so suddenly and tragically?

Maclean’s father asked him, in the wake of his younger brother Paul’s untimely death, ‘Do you think I could have helped him?’ I’ve been asking myself that question about Jamie for the past eight days. I imagine all of us, a community of love gathered in Jamie’s honour, have asked that question at one point or another. And Maclean responded to his father the only way he could, with another question: ‘How can a question be answered that asks a lifetime of questions?’

‘All good things – trout as well as eternal salvation – come by grace, and grace comes by art, and art doesn’t come easy.’

Neither do answers, if they even come at all.

But I wonder if perhaps some seeds of comfort and peace and hope are buried within Maclean’s words. As his brother Paul said, ‘All there is to thinking is seeing something noticeable which makes you see something that you weren’t noticing which makes you see something that isn’t even visible.’ And centuries earlier, Jesus invited people to perceive and experience a reality that seems backwards, where life comes out of death and hope emerges out of despair, where the last are first, the weak are strong, the foolish are wise.

What if we read Maclean’s words backwards? (Not like backward masking an LP, but more sequentially.)

‘Art doesn’t come easy. And grace comes from art. And all good things come by grace.’

This is not an easy day for any of us. And the days ahead don’t look any easier from where we sit. We miss Jamie. Like Paul Maclean, ‘He was (and is) BEAUTIFUL.’ We miss his smiling face and radiant countenance, his acerbic wit and insightful wisdom, his passionate spirit and compassionate heart, his gifted fingers gliding over keyboards of ivory and plastic creating images of inspiration to empower us to be kinder, more loving people, articulating the art of life and Spirit.

That art did not come easy. But it IS still present, and it IS ALIVE.

And it is the seedbed for GRACE.

And grace is the mysterious, miraculous power that empowers comfort and hope and peace and love – all good things, even life itself – to emerge out of the soil of suffering.

As St. Paul said in the climax of that same chapter in Romans:

Who or what will separate us from the love of Jesus? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? No…I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.

Jamie’s date with a writer became a date with a River. And that date with a River has become an eternal date with the end of all Rivers…the Ocean of divine Love.

The Ocean of boundless breadth and fathomless depth that nothing can contain, not life nor death, height nor depth, angels nor demons, philosophy nor religion, politics nor platitudes, life situation nor personal disposition, or anything else in creation or beyond creation…

The Ocean of Love from which NOTHING can separate us…

The Ocean that John Maclean proclaimed so eloquently and passionately here over a century ago as he ruminated upon the Rivers that lead there…

The Ocean filled with haunted and hallowed and healing waters, teeming with mystery and majesty, memories and magnificence and magic...

The Ocean that embraces us just AS we are, loves us right WHERE we are, comforts us in our grief, gives flickers of light in our darkness and glimpses of hope in our despair, and reminds us that spaces of absence – like empty crosses and empty tombs – are actually signs of Presence.

One of Jamie’s last and greatest experiences in his life among us was seeing Paul McCartney give the concert of a lifetime in Missoula last week. It was the last time I actually saw Jamie. I’ll never forget the elation on his face and in his voice as we talked on the phone and waved to each other between the floor and the north end zone. One of the many musical and spiritual highlights of the night was when McCartney led us together in singing a very soulful version of ‘Let It Be’. As we grieve the loss of Jamie and celebrate his life, today and every day forward, may we experience the wonder of Wisdom, the healing of Hope, the light of Love, the absence that reveals Presence…

Truly, ‘Let It Be.’

Benediction

Listen to your life. See it for the fathomless mystery that it is.

In the boredom and pain of it no less than the excitement and gladness:

Touch, taste, smell your way to the holy and hidden heart of it,

Because in the last analysis, all moments are key moments

And life itself is grace. (Frederick Buechner)

May you be blessed by the Love of God.

May you be embraced by the Grace of Jesus.

May you be comforted and empowered by the Presence of the Spirit.

This day and every day, now and forevermore.

Let It Be. Amen.

250 Years On (Interdependence Day 2026)

In this tryingly tumultuous season
for our contiguously indigenous Heart
where the rockets red glaring
and our incessantly belligerent blaring
(ignoring reason and inciting treason)
are seemingly trampling and tearing
the faithful and fragile Fabric
of our Extraordinary Experiment apart
as it attempts to Wave
through unimaginable and unrelenting waves
of unlawful and insubordinate impairment
amidst unthinkable atrocities and frivolities
may celebrating Our ennobling Qualities
(Listening actively and reflectively
Creating collaboratively and communally
Respecting equally and justly
Advocating passionately and compassionately
Serving humbly and honourably
Giving generously and courageously
Living interdependently and intentionally
Loving freely and fully)
and remembering Who and Whose
We truly Are empower Us
to Be a Sacred Space
of inclusive and gracious Embrace
from Sea to shining Sea
for ALL the Huddled Masses
yearning to finally Breathe Free
for ALL innately Beloved Creations
of bountiful and beautiful Diversity
in essential and universal Equality...

on Pelicans and Papas

i Love to watch
the Waves as they
roar and play
splash and spray
the Gulls as they
soar and survey
their next prey
the Winds as they
cause the kites
to Magically sway
and i think
of my Dad
who Loved all
of these sights
plus the Pelicans
gliding in their flights
like Eagles pretending
until drastically descending
into the Ocean
led by instinctive
senses to seek
buried treasure providing
nourishment and pleasure
only to arise again
out of the depths
like a Phoenix
(or a Jesus)
rising from death
with a Majesty
more elegantly distinctive
than their beaks
announcing to All
they are alive again
only to ascend
into the Blue
as they tragically
fly away again
and i miss
my Dad's Wonder
at Mysteries He heard
and his Courage
within the thunder
of histories He Endured
and his Laughter
at the blunders
of comic geniuses absurd
and his Openness
to the Presence
of Love beyond words
that he conveyed
in later years
with gentle kisses
upon my lips
and how can i
Be anything less
than Eternally Grateful
for how that Love
keeps Us alive
helps Us survive
even as i grieve
when the Pelicans
kiss the Waves
on their lips
before they fatefully
and Gracefully leave?

'36'

For the Love
that has met Us
and led Us
through Thin Spaces
and the thicks
when We're healthy
and when We
get the sicks
when We reach
the point where We've
run out of tricks
and found Our Selves
in a bit of a fix
with storms weaving
around among within Us
leaving Us with
no quick fix
and We've had
to lean in
to Each Other
like the candle
We lit once upon
that bright sunshiny Day
by tilting Our Own
Each Other's Way
and touching Our Wicks
to Create an even
more brilliant Light
of the Love
that has fed Us
and threaded Us
through the eyes
of needles and storms
of Surprises and fears
with Laughter and tears
that needled Us
through 36 Years
and on to 'There'
(which is usually
God-Knows-Where)
from Here...

Thank You.

less speaking, more Living (for Ian)

Whilst i babble
too often
with words
He mostly dabbles
with them
and as i try
to soften
hearts and minds
with the language
of Love in Rhyme
and Rhythm
He simply flies
through his days
with less baggage
and more buoyancy
in vibrancy
and vision
and authentically
and beautifully
Lives them
so here's 33 cheers
to my Big Blue
for 33 years
with a Joy
so Real
and a Love
so True
and a Heart
so Giving
and a Spirit
ever Seeking
and Shining
who is always
reminding me
(and Everyone
every Day)
that our greatest
Gift shines brightest
less through
our speaking
and more through
our Living...

Resemble (Easter 2026)

huddled in hiding
just barely surviving
(let alone abiding)
amidst the horrors
of harrowing days
(and narrowing nights)
with no sights
set on emerging
into any kind
Life as they
had known it
(and no conceivable
chances for any
forces from above
or below it
to courageously engage
the oppressive system
and overthrow it)
with worries whirled
into obsessive frenzies
and thoughts swirled
into depressive tendencies
hurled and curled
into a life-or-death
bereft-of-breath
freeze-or-flee
slave-or-free
A-to-Z world
they wearily Awakened
with sleep still
in their eyes
to the Surprise
of a New
kind of Sunrise
a Resurrectional Realm
now being unfurled
the finite alphabet
used to articulate
all they knew
now Expanded by
one Letter More
On Beyond Zebra
which leads me
(in the Present
tense of tensions)
to Wonder if
it is believable
that as We
Assemble as One
in tenuous Solidarity
and Tremble undone
under the weight
of treacherous brutality
(and willingly Wait
with anxious uncertainty)
We surprisingly Arise
with Eternally Open
and Real Eyes
that insightfully Realize
the real lies
that hinder Us
from fully living
Our Real Lives
and rightfully see
the Real Love
that saved Us
from remaining trapped
in fearful unrealities
and made Us
as Creations Who
Resemble the One
Who is Beloved
and Who came
to remind Us
that We are
Beloved as well
Called to Be
a Divine Humanity
Rising and Shining
like the Sun
Trembling at all
of the inhumanity
in sordid insanity
Assembling with All
the Sacred Body
in Humble Unity
Breathing and Being
the Beloved Community...

Tremble (Good Friday 2026)

(in response to
the age-old question
of our Elders
in Spirit who
Sang it True
because the verses
of Their Lives
Rang it True)
while i wasn't
at the site
where caustic fright
caused accostic blight
upon the One
who incarnated Love
in such expansive
and subversive ways
that it threatened
the status quo
of the time
(and maybe Ours)
that abided within
the numbing haze
of entitled sight
(where those who
are privileged enough
to be centered
in society can
only see themselves
and their ways
as the ground
of all being
and the center
of the universe)
when i see
the same tumbling
of tragic terrors
inflicted upon Beloveds
who have simply
tried to Be
Who They Are
Created to Be
unjustly denied of
their Divine Right
to be Free
from the shame
that binds Us
innocent Lives vilified
by the blame
that blinds Us
i do feel
the same Rumbling
of Revealing from
the Ground of
All Being which
emanated in such
convulsively conversive Ways
from the One
Who was crucified
by the cursed
and unquenchable thirst
for paranormative power
Who could have
reacted by invoking
a thundering herd
of hench-angels soaring
down from Heaven
but rather Wisely
responded without saying
a mumbling Word
and by displaying
a humbling Spirit
all of which
only further personified
the Universal Love
that is stronger
than fear-fueled death
and Transformative enough
to change Worlds
and Lives by
causing the Pillars
of the Earth
and the temples
of our traditions
(political and Spiritual)
and the systems
of our survival
(ubiquitous and nervous)
to Tremble...

Thank You.

Assemble (Maundy Thursday 2026)

in Days where
We fearfully Hope
for some way
to cope amidst
all that is attempting
to drive Us apart
We remember One
Who fearlessly faced
the clamourous rage
of pundits and priests
stirring up the pots
of anxious angst
not by arrogantly
taking shots at them
or by laying out
a glamourous fleece
from a gilded cage
but by displaying
an amourous Peace
as a Centered Sage
inviting all Beloveds
not into a fable
but to a Table
of welcome and release
to gather together
in the stormy weather
of not knowing whether
the tenuous Tether
of Cosmic Connection
was present or not
for a faithful (and
some might say fateful)
Feast of Commemoration
an intimate Celebration
before an imminent excoriation
taking a sip
and a swallow
to faithfully follow
and courageously resist
the compelling temptation
to let the Cup
of suffering pass
from Loving lips
and in the grating
of grinding gears
meant to squeeze
the comforting tears
out of Our systems
and drive Us apart
to always remember
that our Innate
Divinely Human Calling
(even when we're falling
into divisive despair
and crumbling into
dissembled disrepair)
is to start
by being Mindful
of our harrowed
and Hallowed Hearts
then surrender our fears
and Assemble in Love...

Thanks.

The Waves (of Grief...and Grace)

the saying goes
that Grief comes
in Waves
and those Words
contain expansive Oceans
of Wisdom...

so why then
do i try
to control
how and when
those Waves fly
and fall
instead of going
with the ebbs
and flows
of Tidal runs
(like the Dancing
of Doubting
and Believing always
knows and shows
the Way)
and simply receiving
what the Ocean
naturally provides
(remembering my youth
where i met
The Waves
with both fears
and fascinating Joy
deep yearning
and emancipating Hope
learning the Rhythms
and reading
the turbulent Tides
to know when
to dive
under Their thunder
just to survive
Their power
and when They
were engendering more
exhilarating Rides
and my irrational
yet understandable fears
once submerged
then emerged (one
could say Surf-aced)
and converged
with my tears
in an Embrace
of Salty
and Sacred Grace
by the Face
of Love)?

so why not
allow the Waves
of Grief
to crash on
the sandy Shores
of Loss
or ruddy Rocks
covered with regrets
like moss
yet also filled
with hidden Life
beneath strife
serving as solid
places to rest
or stand
for seagulls and
egrets waiting to
take Flight
and safe spaces
to express that
neverending Love
without pretending and
sending It out
knowing It
has nowhere and
no place left
to go?

so while We
are groping through
the mist
of the Memories
and Hoping in
the midst
of the pain
of the losing
of Beloveds
as We surrender
to the thunder
in Wonder
and listen to
the Wisdom of
The Waves
in the Ocean
of Majestic Motion
in Love
may We always
remember there is
no need
to give Ourselves
some kind of
guilty shove
into the Tide
and there is
no shame
in our choosing
when to refrain
or Ride
and as We
let the tears
and fears
of endless years
more Naturally and
Supernaturally Flow
They will Show
Us the Way
to Go...

YOU and ME and WE

In all of my silliness,
you've laughed with me.

In all of my sullenness,
you've sat with me.

In all of my madness,
you've centered me.

In all of my sadness,
you've comforted me.

And through it all,
you've reminded me
in all of our seasons
all of the reasons
we have been given
for Joyfulness and Gladness
and helped me see
the Ever-Presence
of the Greatest
Present of All...
the Love of Christ
that gives us Life
the Light of Christ
that gives us Hope
the Spirit of Christ
that lives in us
and through us
that guides us onward
into whatever is next
while inviting us
to pay attention
to whatever is right
in front of us.

Thank you
for Being YOU
and helping me
to Be ME
journeying more deeply
into what it means
to be WE.

i Love you
for Eternity
to Infinity
and Beyond...

Dream Into Reality (MLK Day 2026)

amidst all the forces
surging from Our
love of power
that make it seem
like we are destined
for endless divorces
through apoplectic derision
into permanent division
and apocalyptic destruction
the fear and hatred
saturating our senses
like poison that courses
through what remains
of our system that
shrivels and strains
life-giving causeways
into varicose veins
threatening impending fatality
in ultimate finality...
Thank You, Brother Martin
for eternally urging Us
to remember Our
love of power
is no match for
the Power of Love
and reminding Us
from beyond the grave
(and within our Hearts)
that the Beautiful Dream
is still infinitely Alive
as an imminent Vision
of One People
with countless Expressions
and bountiful Character
and despite all appearances
and inhumane interferences
It is being birthed
into more than
a beautiful Dream
but a Beloved Reality...

Let It Be.

Compartmentalization as Integration (New Years 2026)

within the dawning chill and thrill
of this first New Day of the New Year
(which We meet and greet
with yawning and yearning)
may All Beloved Creatures and Creation
(the Ones flailing in frantic fear enacting trauma
and the Ones incurring and enduring it)
both be inclusively
Seen and Cherished
Accepted and Embraced
Nourished and Nurtured
Housed and Hallowed
Clothed and Celebrated
Precious and Protected
Held and Healed
from discrimination and disease and despair
as We All buzz around and amongst Each Other
amidst our churning in frustration
and our serving in faithful Loving Care
like the busy Bees We can
sometimes obsessively be
may We remember that We Are Each
a Part of the same honey-creating Hive
with Gifts to share
Vitality to create
Wisdom to teach
along our Eternal Journey of learning
how there is Love burning
within each Blessed Heart
and with all Our differences
of conviction and perception
may We realize
that We remain
One Beloved Incarnation
Whose Hearts all Beat the same
Whose Lungs all Breathe the same
and yet Who each are embodying
a unique Story
adding essential Beauty
to the Whole
sentient Beings set Free to Be
less concerned about Who isn't Loving Us
and more compelled by Whom We are Loving
and Living less towards Hope
like a resolution merely to be kept
and more like a Way of Being and Breathing
when everything else leaves us believing
that there is no Hope left
Emptiness and Absence
that reveals Presence
empowering Us together
in Our distinct yet interdependent compartments
to interrelate and emanate the Glory
of Being Alive...

Let It Be.

Beyond words

what happens next
when Your Soul
is utterly bereft
when You have
no more Rays
of Inspiration left
to call upon
no more Wells
of Creativity within
to draw upon
no more Spells
of Spirit to
unleash or unfurl
no more Ways
to bring Hopeful
words or wishes
to our hurting
Hearts and World?

maybe You take
a deep Breath
and allow It
to reassure You
that You're alive
and You exist
not merely to
stave off death
and wearily survive
but to Breathe
more essential Life
into our World
in Your own
very special Way...

maybe You shed
some traumatic Tears
and allow Them
to roll down
your swollen cheeks
and slip silently
into your ears
(recognizing and releasing
Your somatic fears)
and rain down
into Sacred Soil
of the World
upon which You
prayerfully, carefully Lay...

maybe You light
one simple candle
and allow It
to tentatively flicker
yet persistently glow
to courageously show
that We are
numinous and numerous
Stars that shine
as the Light
of the World
illumining the Luminous
Night as Day...

maybe You touch
the hurting Heart
of another Beloved
with Your Heart
in Mindful Attention
Face to Face
and allow That
to create Space
to relieve tension
and reveal Grace
reminding Us that
We are Beloved
and We Belong
in this World
as Living Words
that embody Love
Beyond what words
can ever say...

what happens Today?

Faithful Folly

in times where
the squeakiest wheels
get the grease
of attention
and release
may we all
receive the Gift
of Faithful Folly
and Miraculous Mirth
given to jolly
old St. Zech(araiah)
who wondered how
the heck his ancient
seed and Liz's weary
womb might conceive
a precious Possibility
becoming a Reality
and found his ancient
tongue ceased
as sacred Silence
increased within
and Transformed
his ancient wound
into his Womb
of Rebirth...

Let It Be.

Leftovers

in a Land
of more than
Plenty where it
remains a Mystery
how tables filled
with Compassionate Charity
and wholehearted Abundance
and harvested Hope
one Day become
trails of tyrannical
terror based upon
a maniacal myth
of hardhearted scarcity
darkening the next
trampling Our Interdependency
in the redundancy
of conspicuous consumption
leaving Our Senses
perplexed and Our
Sensibilities utterly vexed
with nothing left
but the leftovers
from the Celebrations
filling Our fridges
after filling Our
Selves into unconsciousness
whilst memories of
Those needing comfort
this dark Day
empty out of
Our blurry consciences
and are left
grieving and bereft
of essential provisions
yet They remain
an Essential Part
of the Heart
of Our Community
amidst our thirst
to be thought
of as first
and far better
than the rest
(an innate insecurity
that puts Others
rather than Ourselves
to the test)
may Our Vision
reflect the Clarity
that recognizes Wisdom
within the foolishness
and Dignity within
each overlooked Incarnation
may Our Communication
be less like
Our slurry speech
at the end
of the party
and more like
the Sacred Fables
and Songs sung
around Our tables
and may Our
Connections and Interactions
be driven less
by the forces
that lead Us
to additional courses
of savory satisfaction
(momentarily quelling the
the perpetual rumblies
in Our tumblies)
and empowered more
by the Spirit
of Divine Love
that Celebrates All
Beloveds as Precious
(especially Those Who
are so often
Leftover for last
Who in Reality
are humbly and
simply the Best)...

Amen.

reeling and Healing (Thanksgiving 2025)

on a Day that was created
as a way for All People
and the Land
from whence We came
upon which We stand
to be celebrated
(even as We remember
the People degraded
the Land degradated)
We recognize
how this Land
is still Beautiful
and continues to
feed All People
which reminds Us how
fear blinds Us to how
We are all Interrelated
and how We
need All People
and this Land
to be Yours and Mine
and Ours in order
to Live and Love
across our distances
amidst our differences
by weathering the showers
of red-hot rage
and white-hot anger
that grieve Us
and leave Us
tangled up in blue
through acknowledging our wounds
as a Source of Healing
(even as our tender
Senses are reeling
and can't quite reach
consensus on what
We're All feeling)
and tethering Our Selves
to the Earth which gave
Us birth and the Love
which saves Us and
shows Us our worth
togethering Us to what
is Real and True
so through the thrall
of threatening torrents
throughout the Land
and the squall
of abysmal abhorrence
amongst the People
may We All
give Thanks
for Her
for Them
for Us
for You...

Amen.

Let Them Be

for All Transgender Beloveds
Whose Divinely-Created Identities
have been questioned
and doubted
and bludgeoned
and bruised
and shamed
and abused
by Some Who
have allowed Their
own Divinely-Created Identities
to be infiltrated
by unsubstantiated fears
and egregiously
(even religiously) used
less as instruments
to understand and accept
and more as weapons
to belittle and accuse
to elicit tears
less from empathy
more from enmity
against These
fellow Beloveds
the Ones left
literally shaking
in their shoes
bereft of safety
and wondering if
(and when)
the next one
will drop
on Them
needing some shelter
from this inhumane
helter skelter storm
being played out
(and blamed outrageously)
on Them
being prayed for
whilst being preyed upon
yet choosing courageously
amidst the insanity
to stand authentically
in their Divine Humanity
even at the risk
of losing their lives
and grieving
fellow Beloveds
who were ushered
into their leaving
far too soon...

May You Know
that You Are Loved
just as You Are
priceless Treasures
Whose Revelatory Radiance
will never be
contained or remain
hidden behind hatred
buried beneath bigotry
but shines Beautifully
through the cracks
of our sordid
and Sacred Soil
and Trans-Formatively
through and beyond
the taxing toil
of digging through
our volatile frivolity
to unearthing
our True Identity
and birthing
our New
(and overdue)
Equality.

Let It Be...
and Let Them Be.

Sanctuary

when the tidal waves
of worry and despair
over inhumanity and insanity
overwhelm me like the
bluster of a chaotic
tsunami and the blare
of trumpets of herald
and drown me down
and out with the
weight of the world
wrapped around my neck
whilst grasping at straws
and gasping for Air
with nary a shout
causing my decreasing senses
to become increasingly blurry
as i despondently descend
into the daunting depths
of my imminent death
(not unlike the wreck
of the Edmund Fitzgerald)
i am seriously surprised
to deliriously discover that
the fearful Darkness
is Transcendently Luminous
the midnight blues
and emerald greens
comprise the protective
and welcoming cover
of Communion unseen
where the vales
of submerged seaweed
somehow see me
and the reflective
clefts of rock
hide the bales
of Sea Turtles
awesome, ancient Beings
Who have responded
to cataclysmic circumstances
and prowling predators
with amazing adaptations
and extraordinary evolutions
by ceasing Their
commotion in order
to increase Their
capacity for holding
Their collective Breath
in submerged safety
a Sacred Sanctuary
of sheltered Space
to fully face
and freely embrace
all the haunting
fears and tears
weighing me down
binding me up
Their increased capacity
Miraculously expanding mine
to innately trust
the Primal Power
of Eternal Love
to thrust Us
to the surface
of the surging
and swirling Seas
emerging and converging
together as One
reminding me that
We are forever
connected (beyond what's
expected) and never
rejected or alone...

Let It Be.

$1.17

when facing all
of the challenges
threatening to overwhelm
our systems of
Ecology and Equality
like a tsunami
of tyrannical terror
and gratuitous greed
one simple Gift
of one dollar
and seventeen cents
may not appear
to make sense
or meet all
of the needs
in the grand
scheme of things
but around It
rings the Music
of the Spheres
Its simplicity sings
from a Soul
no longer held
captive to illusions
of control driven
by a subconscious
fear of scarcity
but broken apart
by widow-making despair
through inhumane disparity
while simultaneously being
more fully opened
by window-breaking Spirit-Air
through the Reality
of subversive Abundance
in conversive Love
making Us Whole
and the realization
that having nothing
left to lose
improbably yet surprisingly
means having everything
left to give
(and to gain)
and no Gift
freely given is
ever in vain
a few cents
can express more
Sense through Sensitivity
some jangly bits
of precious change
are Enough to
change the tide
and amply provide
One simple Start
to a Revolution
of the Heart
where We recognize
there is nothing
we truly own
except the ability
to take care
of perfect strangers
who are merely
neighbors we have
yet to meet
as our own
fellow Beloveds who
comprise One Entity
a living Organism
with Loving Equity
and essential Justice
at the Core
of Our Being
that simply yet
profoundly Just Is...

Let It Be.
